TREMÄ consortium & seminar (2024-2025)

TREMÄ - Tunisian-French consortium & seminar on disease resistance in field crops

Genetic resistances are an indispensable resource and a key lever in the successful transition to an agriculture less dependent on chemical protection. The management of these resources in local areas remains imperfect due to a lack of information, preconceived ideas, and controversy (cf. Lannou et al, 2020; SuMCrop 2022 transdisciplinary resistance seminar). To make resistance a lever for sustainable disease management, it is necessary to establish a transdisciplinary dialogue with stakeholders in farming areas and supply chains.

Background and challenges

This is particularly important in the countries of the Mediterranean basin, where genetic resources are incompletely characterized and still under-utilized, due to a lack of popularized knowledge and an unstructured, multi-stakeholder industry where reluctance and even divergent interests are expressed. The SuMCrop SEED project (2021-2023) has revealed that the durum wheat sector in Tunisia is particularly affected by this situation and that a transdisciplinary dialogue could have a major impact from both an academic and an applied point of view.

Objectives

The aim of this proposal is to set up a consortium to organize a transdisciplinary seminar between France and Tunisia on the management of varietal resistance in field crops. Exchanges among stakeholders in research, development, farming and public policy will make it possible to:

  • Discuss ongoing work and initiatives, and share results, concepts and strategies.
  • Identify avenues for future collaboration, project incubation and partnerships, and even define joint transdisciplinary action.
